Patients Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using these drugs must be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
